Kite Flying
Lincoln City is a place where kite flying is a way of life. On clear summer days when stiff winds blow over the D River Wayside State Park, the sky is filled with scores of kites. The local kite community celebrates two kite festivals each year, the Summer Kite Festival in June, and the Fall Kite Festival, which is held in October at the D River Wayside. Competitions, parades, children’s activities and a sky full of color bring fliers and spectators from all over the world.

Playgrounds
Olivia Beach Park is located just across the street and has a new play structure for young kids.
Regatta Park, which fronts Devil’s Lake, boasts a state-of-the-art playground for children, as well as a boat launch, walking trails, and an interpretive center. Regatta Park is also home of one of the oldest trees in Oregon, estimated to be 400 years old.
Wecoma Park is on NW 31st and Jetty, with a children’s playground.
Dorchester Park is on NW Neptune and 28th, and has Tennis Courts
Newport also has an amazing playground, Coast Park, with a giant pirate ship slide, just 35 minutes drive south.
Surfing
When the waves break like that you know you need to get on the board. Nelscott Reef, one of the best surfing spots on the West Coast, will give you a great and fun workout you will never forget. Next best is to watch surfers catch a ride!

Sea Kayaking on Devil’s Lake
Devil’s Lake State Park offers inexpensive kayaking tours on Devils Lake. For other spots, local tour companies offer rentals and guided tours of lakes, rivers, and natural areas. They also have paddle boats.
Crabbing & Clamming
Crabbing & clamming are great activities for any group, any time of the year. The Siletz Bay at the south edge of Lincoln City is a prime spot for both. Crab pots are available for use in the garage, please replace if lost or they will be deducted from your deposit. Dory Cove offers permits for harvesting our local crustaceans. Check the schedule for clam/crabbing clinics.

Walk around these neighborhoods whose buildings have stood for almost a hundred years. This is a part of Lincoln City you do not want to miss. The Taft district is the next district south of Nelscott on US 101.

Hiking
Cascade Head Trail #1310
Trail is located within the Cascade Head Scenic-Research Area, north of the Highway 101 and 18 junction 0.5 miles. The south trailhead is located at the corner of Highway 101 and Three Rocks Road. This trail runs north to south within the Cascade Head Scenic Research Area. This Sitka Spruce-Western Hemlock rainforest has been studied by foresters since 1934. This trail is less crowded than the other two popular trails in the area – it is entirely inland and has no viewpoints. Mid-way on the trail near the headwaters of Calkins Creek there remains a grove of six-foot diameter Sitka spruce. Trail has a forested backdrop with large Sitka spruce, Western hemlock, Douglas fir and Red alder.
Drift Creek Falls
Off of Hwy 101, South of Lincoln City, flanked by ferns, alder trees and vine maple, Drift Creek Trail winds through the rain-drenched Siuslaw National Forest. The Drift Creek Trail is amazing until you arrive at something even better and bigger that will take your breath away: a 240-foot long cable suspension bridge! Anchored by cables and ties that are cemented into opposing bluffs, the bridge holds over a hundred fifty thousand pounds, so it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
While the bridge does offer a bit of a bounce, the thirty-inch wide tread is perfectly safe and the bird’s-eye view will leave you spellbound. As does Drift Creek Falls, a 75-foot freefall, whopper of a waterfall that’s located immediately below you.

South to Newport
Our favorite area of Newport in the Nye Beach Community, which is a foodie haven. If you have kids or grandkids, you’ll want to plan to spend a good long visit at Coast Park, 100 SW Coast Ave. It’s a brand new park with a giant shipwreck slide: it’s pretty impressive!
About a 35-minute drive south with plenty of other things to do in Newport.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a world-class marine educational attraction nestled on beautiful Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon. The Aquarium is a living classroom for all learning styles and ages. As one of Oregon’s top tourist attractions, the Aquarium is a vital educational resource for the state, with over 40,000 students visiting the aquarium each year. North to Pacific City & Tillamook
Pacific City is a beautiful little beach community to the north, about a half hour drive away. Aside from the impressive Haystack Rock, the main attractions is Pelican Pub & Brewery, a delicious microbrewery with an amazing view–it is also popular among paragliders. The Oregon Hang Gliding School offers beginner classes here on a regular basis. They even will teach kids and have a summer camp for teenagers.
Tillamook Cheese Factory/Museum
An hour drive north along 101. For a free and fun indoor activity, check out Oregon’s most famous cheese factory. You’ll have a bird’s-eye view of cheesemaking and packaging teams in action, churning out 167,000 pounds of Tillamook Cheese each and every day. A must-see location for history, military and plane buffs of all kinds. Great for all ages! See one of America’s finest collections of over 30 magnificently restored warbirds including our P-38 Lightning, F4U-Corsair, P51-Mustang, PBY Catalina and SBD Dauntless dive bomber. Explore the Exhibit Hall with rare wartime and aviation artifacts, all housed in a rare World War II Blimp Hangar, the world’s largest wooden structure!
This is further north, en route back to Portland via a scenic route. Yet, this is one our favorite family friendly tourist stops.I’m not exaggerating to say that we’ve been there a dozen times. It’s also a great place to take an easy hike along the Wilson River.
Travel Tips en Route to Portland
We love driving through the beautiful wine country, even if we don’t get to stop as often as we’d like…with our underage travelers. The top two we love are Sokol Blosser and White Rose Estate. McMinnville also has about eight wine bars in six blocks, and most offer free samples (in case you have a designated dinner).
McMinnville also has a great health food store, Harvest Fresh Grocery & Deli, which has ideal picnic supplies. We are HUGE fans of the Red Fox Bakery, which has amazing breads, pastries and amazing sandwiches with yummy macaroons. The day old challah bread is great for french toast! We also have a punch card for Serendipity Ice Cream.

Tsunami Evacuation
Please review the evacuation route map and instructions on the refrigerator. There is a siren warning system, which would blare steady for three minutes. Evacuate on foot, if possible, to avoid traffic jams. La Sirena is on high ground, and is the evacuation zone for the entire community.
Weather Information
Weather conditions on the Oregon coast can vary greatly. It is advised to go with a layered approach of comfortable and cozy items to adjust to all conditions. Fall through spring are likely to get the most rain. Summer nights can drop significantly and require long pants and fleeces even on the warmest of nights.
